Abasi Kiyimba appointed full professor

By YAHYA SSEREMBA

Distinguished academic Abasi Kiyimba, famously known as Dr. Kiyimba, is now a full Professor, according to the Makerere University Office of the Appointments Board.

Professor is the highest academic rank attainable only after decades of scholarly work. It is attainable by associate professors who have excelled in research and teaching and whose creativity is evident.

Besides teaching English Literature since the 1980s, Prof. Kiyimba has researched and published extensively on Islam and Muslims in Uganda, authoring books such as The Problem of Muslim Education in Uganda.

The soft-spoken but assertive Muslim activist investigated the massacre of innocent Muslim civilians following the fall of President Idi Amin and published his findings in a must-read book,  Is the 1979 Muslim Blood-bath in Bushenyi History?: A Review of the Genocide that was Called "liberation".

His reputation as a scholar and researcher is equally reflected in the works he has written on the life and contribution of Muslim heroes, including Sheikh Nuhu Mbogo, Sheikh Abdullah Ssekimwanyi, Sheikh Swaib Ssemakula and President Amin.

Prof. Kiyimba is also a founding member of the Uganda Muslim Youth Assembly (UMYA) and its political wing, the Justice Forum, or Jeema.  For 30 years UMYA, which Kiyimba currently chairs, has espoused Muslim causes and extended education and other social services to the community.

Besides opening a new chapter in his continuous creation of knowledge and his continuous community contribution, Kiyimba’s ascendance to professorship shall be seen as a milestone in the education of the country’s Muslim Community that for long had no access to school.

“Upon this monumental achievement, I propose that all his former students and friends on this forum organise a public lecture on 'Redefining the contribution of the humanities to solving the current economic, social and political challenges of Uganda and the world'," said Issa Matovu, Kiyimba’s former student who heads the Uganda Muslim Teachers Association, in a comment he posted on the internet-based Uganda Muslim Brothers and Sisters forum. “ There after, we should host Prof. Abasi Kiyimba to a simple dinner in line with the simple lifestyle he has defined for himself as a scholar.”

According to the list released by the Appointments Board Thursday, a copy of which The Campus Journal news website has obtained, Dr. Archileo N. Kaaya of Food and Nutrition was also promoted to Professor.

Other promoted academics include Dr. Ali Twaha Basamba of Agriculture, who is now Associate Professor. See full list below:

Congraculation Brother/prof Kiyimba, may Allah give you good health such that you continue with that noble duty of serving the society. Teaching was a professional of our beloved Prophet Muhamad peace be unto him, you are blessed for having chosen the same road, i also thank you for being brave, however, as people advance in life/age and ranks they intend to develope more love for Dunia and hating to die and this is very dangerous to the Ummah as the messenger of Allah said.
